  1. Perception as a Mental
  2. Construction
  3. We see either a vase or two
  4. profiles, depending on how we
  5. organize the visual pattern.

  7.     Initially, the camera theory
  8. seems a congenial explanation
  9. of why we see the world as we
  10. do. It seems to fit so well with
  11. our tendency to presume that
  12. our visual perceptions, as well
  13. as our perceptions based on our
  14. other senses, are direct
  15. recordings of reality.
  16. Philosophers refer to the belief
  17. or unconscious assumption
  18. that the world that we perceive
  19. is identical with a real world
  20. that exists independent of our
  21. experience of it as naive
  22. realism. If that real world is
  23. simply identical with the world
  24. that we perceive, it is
  25. understandable why one might
  26. think that all we need do to
  27. perceive it is to take a picture
  28. of it. To understand perception,
  29. however, we must discard this
  30. assumption. Only by doing so
  31. can we appreciate that the
  32. mind does not simply record an
  33. exact image of the world but
  34. creates its own "picture."
